The award was first given in 1994. There is no prize money involved. It is supported by the Contemporary Arts Educational Project, Inc., in loving memory of Anna Fahrni, and by the publisher Green Integer.

Judges

Each year, the judges are a group that changes each year, with six to eight members. These members include poets, writers of stories, authors of plays, and experts in literature. The chairman is Douglas Messerli.
