Each year, the American Academy of Arts and Letters gives two Gold Medals to recognize outstanding accomplishments. These two medals are given in turn from these categories:
In 1915, the Academy decided to create an additional Gold Medal for "special distinction." This medal is awarded for the entire body of work by someone who is not a member of the Academy. The first of these special lifetime achievement medals was given in 1916 to former Harvard president Charles Eliot.
