The Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children's Book Award honors authors and illustrators who create books that show the Mexican American experience. This award was started in 1995 by the College of Education at Texas State University to celebrate Tomás Rivera, a notable graduate who was an educator, poet, and writer. His works focused on the challenges faced by Mexican migrant farmers. He was also the first Mexican American to hold the chancellor role at the University of California.
