The Evaristo Prize for African Poetry is a literary award created by the African Poetry Book Fund (APBF) in 2013. Before this, it was known as the Brunel International African Poetry Prize, which was supported by Brunel University and writer Bernardine Evaristo. In 2023, the APBF took over the award and changed its name to the Evaristo Prize for African Poetry.
The Brunel International African Poetry Prize was designed to help grow, celebrate, and share African poetry with the world. It was supported by Brunel University and Bernardine Evaristo. In the past, it worked with organizations like Commonwealth Writers and the African Poetry Book Fund USA. The prize gave £3,000 to winners. It was open to poets who had not published their work before and had a collection of ten poems. Bernardine Evaristo started the prize in 2011 to help African poets gain attention outside of Africa and support new poets who might become well-known internationally. She managed the prize until 2023.
In 2023, the prize was renamed the Evaristo Prize for African Poetry. Now, it gives an annual prize of USD $1,500 to winners.
