Idyll

Date

An idyll (pronounced /ˈaɪdɪl/ in the US and /ˈɪdɪl/ in the UK; from the Greek word eidullion, meaning "short poem") is a short poem that describes simple country life. It is written in the style of Theocritus's short poems about the countryside, called the Idylls (Εἰδύλλια). Unlike Homer, who wrote about heroes and battles, Theocritus focused on everyday scenes in a small, close-knit world.

Unlike Homer, who wrote about heroes and battles, Theocritus focused on everyday scenes in a small, close-knit world. Later poets who followed his style include the Roman poets Virgil and Catullus, Italian poets Torquato Tasso, Sannazaro, and Leopardi, the English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson (who wrote Idylls of the King), and Nietzsche's Idylls from Messina. Goethe's poem Hermann and Dorothea, which Schiller called the high point of Goethe's work, is also considered an idyll.

Terminology

The term "idyll" is used in music to describe a piece that shows rural or countryside life, such as Edward MacDowell's Forest Idylls. It also refers to a type of French entertainment from the baroque period that combined music, ballet, and singing based on a pastoral poem. Examples include Lully's Idylle sur la Paix with words by Racine, Charpentier's Idylle sur le retour de la santé du Roi H.489, and Desmarets' Idylle sur la naissance du duc de Bourgogne with words by Antoinette Deshoulières.

In visual arts, an idyll is a painting that shows scenes similar to those in peaceful, rural poetry, often focusing on the lives of farmers or peasants. One of the earliest examples is the 15th-century painting Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry. This style was especially common in English paintings from the Victorian era.

In relationships, an idyll with someone means a short, very happy, peaceful, and romantic time spent together, usually in a scenic or rural place. It suggests a simple, carefree escape from daily life's challenges. It can also describe a brief, intense romantic relationship.
