The European Literature Prize is a Dutch award given every year since 2011. It honors the best contemporary European novel published the year before and translated into Dutch. The author of the winning book receives €10,000, and the translator receives €5,000.
The prize was created by the Dutch Foundation for Literature, the cultural and educational center SPUI25, the weekly newspaper De Groene Amsterdammer, and the Athenaeum Boekhandel bookstore. It is supported by the Lira Fund and many independent bookstores. Book recommendations come from Dutch and Flemish bookshops, but the final decision about the winner is made by a group of experts.
